13- A Hand on the Throne of the Lord – 1

“And he said, ‘A hand on the throne of the Lord; the Lord has war against Amalek from generation to generation.’” RASHI interprets, “The Creator swore that His name will not be whole and His throne will not be whole until He blots out the name of Amalek,” meaning that the name is split in half.

To understand this, we must first present the verse, “In Yod-Hey [the Lord], the Lord is an everlasting rock.” That is, He depicted the worlds with the two letters Yod- Hey. In the Mishnah: “The world was created with ten utterances. What does that mean? After all, it could have been created with one utterance. Yet, it was created in ten utterances in order to avenge the wicked who are destroying the world” (Avot, Chapter 5).

There is a famous question: Does the Creator complain against His creations? It is like one who gives to his friend a cup that is worth one pound to watch over it. If he loses it, he must pay only one pound, but the landlord paid ten pounds. Should he have paid ten pounds for this?

The thing is that in the beginning, He created the world with the quality of judgment. When He saw that the world cannot exist, He associated with it the quality of mercy, for by this, man will be able to achieve his completion. Conversely, when it was in the quality of judgment, it was impossible for man to be able to emerge from his evil inclination.

This is the meaning of “to give a good reward to the righteous.” In other words, by the correction of the quality of mercy, called “ten utterances,” there is existence to the world.

“And to avenge the wicked,” meaning now that they have been given the chance to emerge from the control of the inclination, they still do not want to. For this they deserve to lose the world, although there is the correction of ten utterances there, which is easier than before the correction, meaning in one utterance.
