Reader: We are continuing to read the Arosa document, “Altruists and Egoists in Society.”
According to scientists, altruists make up approximately 10% of humanity. The percentage of altruists in society is constant. This percentage is genetically conditioned, and exists irrespective of such external conditions as the influence of family, education, and society. Altruists do not disappear; the altruistic gene is concealed within a person, and cannot be destroyed. Without any connection to education or the influence of the society, altruists make up about 10% of humanity in a natural way.
Rav: We don’t see these people unless they are in various organizations or singled out. But it’s not exactly like this. The meaning of the ten percent of altruists which exists in the world is that also in each and every one there’s a certain part which is called "the altruist within him." The individual and the many are equal. This is what pushes the person here and there towards actions of the altruistic sort.
Now this changes and is expressed in all kinds of forms which we can say are altruism, or not altruism, relating to the level of this world. However, on all the levels of surrender (except for the ego, which works to receive in order to receive or to bestow in order to receive), there’s a certain profit towards fellow man. Of course, he has here a profit for himself, but the profit is in the form of an altruistic compensation. This is called "the egoistic altruism." Of course, he receives. But he receives from being within the act of bestowal, with some sort of inclination. In other words, he has desires.
He has calculations along with the desires both in Mocha (mind/brain) and heart (Liba). They exist according to a program from which he receives pleasure from giving. He feels himself as more of a person. He has self-respect, a higher self-esteem. It is not precisely because society values him because he bestows in order to receive.
But there is something from within him that he doesn't receive compensation in a direct way either from the world or from anyone else. This is the quality of the Bina, the final outcome of it, which is far, far away, but in any case exists within him. It is from all the kinds of manners and especially through the connections with the other qualities within him that he cannot exactly distinguish where his ego is (which works this way in a hidden fashion) and where it really originates being from the side of the Shoresh (root),of Bina which exists in each and every one from the breaking of Adam ha Rishon (the First Man). However, this is found to be, let’s say, ten percent in each and every person and ten percent in general humanity. By this we exist.
We can divide the way altruism exists in people into different stages. We can say the beastly altruism, the corporeal altruism, exists also in animals and beasts. We can see how they exist and they give to each other. We can speak about the levels of the inanimate, vegetative, animate states. In those states we certainly find it in cells, in the gathering of the animals in groups, i.e., in ants, in flies, in bees, and other assemblies or packs and different groups in the sea. The forces of nature are thus operating on these states. And with a person this includes his calculations. But without this ten percent, the human society could not grasp at all this spiritual idea.
Therefore Baal HaSulam says up to ten percent. This is what we see and this thing you cannot inherit from father to son. This thing is constant throughout all of history, within all of us, and you cannot erase it or aim it in any way. This is the way it exists.
Of course, in the development of a person, the development of society and the way it exists in society, we can more or less see the outcome of this phenomenon. The ten percent that Baal HaSulam tells us about, the scientists say that by their calculations it’s six percent, six out of a hundred. Baal HaSulam says up to ten out of one hundred. This is according to science and to what we’ve attained by the five senses and also to what we’ve obtained by the wisdom of Kabbalah (from the root of all of reality). This is a phenomenon that exists, which is constant.
Again, it exists because humanity must be prepared to grasp the spiritual idea. On lower levels than the human—on the levels of vegetative, animate and inanimate—there, these forces work without need of development. But for the gathering of material for a more complex structure, molecules, atoms or living cells where each and every one waives or gives themselves up for the other in order to multiply and connect, if all of the cells wish to connect together in a stronger and more complex body, then each individual cell must renounce himself.
Suppose I take the part of the breathing cells and “you” take the part of the cells of the liver and “you” take the part of the cells of the mind and “you” take the part of the cells of the heart. By doing this, each already surrenders his generality and each one cannot exist without the other, to the extent of responsibility and distribution. There must be Arvut (mutual responsibility/guarantee) at this level of animate. One needs to think of the others and to give to them what he works for in the body and to receive from the other. It is a very important measure of connection.
I wish we could arrive at this sometime in humanity, i.e., such a connection that I waive and give and the other understands that I waive for him and he gives me, he commits to me and so forth, and thus the body exists.
Once there were individual cells and within each one everything was contained like when the agriculturist used to live. He had milk, and also meat and food from the land where he used to live. He manufactured everything on his own. If you want to progress, then you have to operate in a different way. Let’s say a person doesn’t know anything but how to play the violin. Take away his violin, there’s nothing. But by having this special thing, he gives to society and he receives everything from society. Without this we could not have become complex and special and could not have raised society to its height.
Each one has to renounce himself to the other and commit one to the other, in bestowal. We understand that on the corporeal level. What we don't understand is that we must be at the same level of connection to be also on a spiritual level.
Like on the corporeal level, from this we rise from the state where we are savages to a person who has everything because there are a thousand different professions, and each one takes a profession and he knows that he is serving others and they are serving him. This is how we have to be in spirituality also. We must collect in one body spiritually. There are ten percent of altruists, for each one of us and in humanity in general. In each society, more or less, you can always find up to ten percent where they are actually ready to absorb the spiritual idea.
Question: Why does a person have to waive in order to be connected with others spiritually, the spiritual idea? What does he have to waive, in accordance to the living body, like each cell waives in order to exist in the corporeal body?
With reference to the living body, a cell in the living body has the understanding that it belongs to the general body; and the general body has a goal to survive, live and develop. If this cell wants to be part of the general body, then it must relinquish its independence and connect to the rest of the body by a certain role in which it could be with the body for the benefit of the general life of the living body.
By waiving its own privacy and by being ready to serve the body, in all the body shall say, in everything that the body says, it gains the life of the living body, ascends from the level of animate to the speaking level, belongs to the level of speaking. This is something completely different. We don’t know what it means because we don’t feel the distinction between the steps. We’re not within a Masach (screen) where we can go through the different steps and see how, in each step, nature changes. But a cell in the body, which belongs to the human and not to the beast, has the spiritual life of that body. We don’t know it, but it’s the spiritual life.
It’s hard for me to explain and express this. For example, take the heart from a pig and put it into a human, into a Kabbalist. He will act by the spiritual laws, or even the corporeal laws. That same part that enters his corporeal body, which comes from the pig (it doesn’t matter where) is also included in the same spiritual level where the person exists and becomes a part of it. It doesn’t matter. Connected is called "connected by something." By the way, pig is forbidden only to eat. Use all the rest of the things from it as you please.
Question: When we say readiness to hear this matter of Kabbalah, what’s the distinction between a person who is ready to hear this and a person sitting here, who will pass through all of this process till he is ripe?
This readiness comes by the recognition of evil when a person sees that except for his ego he has nothing. He understands that he cannot exit his ego on his own; that there is no one who can help him but the Creator. In order to come to the scream, to demand from the Creator, he needs the strength of the group. That’s it. This scream must be arranged in many, many details.
We’re going on to “ Altruism pays off.
Although 90% of the people in any society are egoists, culture, science, art, religion, ethics, law, and education are based entirely on the concepts of the altruistic 10% in society. This is so because altruistic behavior is profitable for all. Altruism rules in education: Schools teach us to be altruists; we are told to be honest, hard-working, respectful of others, to share with others what we have, to be friendly, and to love our neighbors. All this happens because altruism is beneficial to society.
The functionality laws of living organisms teach us that the existence of an organism depends on the cooperative work of all its parts. Born altruists naturally engage in altruistic actions, but to egoists, such actions seem utterly impossible. Despite their naturally egoistic nature, awareness of the law of living organisms leads to altruistic co-existence of cells in every organism.
Similarly, the perception of the benefits of altruistic behavior is present in an egoistic human society. No one in the world actively opposes altruistic acts. On the contrary, all organizations and personalities advertise their involvement in altruistic actions and pride themselves in them. No one openly objects to the dissemination of altruistic ideals in the world. Thus, evidently, success in bringing humanity easily and quickly to the new civilization depends solely on the unification of the altruistic organizations and the dissemination of the message.
Although it seems to us that our society is one hundred percent totally egoistic as well as nature and everything which surrounds us exists only by the egoistic laws, this is because we look at nature and all of reality (the whole world, upon ourselves, within ourselves), through our five senses which are connected to our desire to receive. It weighs, understands, sees and feels only in a way that it receives pleasure, that it is filled. Therefore it seems to us that all of nature around us is the desire to receive, because "a person who disqualifies, disqualifies according to his own faults." Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to distinquish things.
If we had different tools, i.e., different internal qualities, we would see nature, ourselves, and everything around us differently, until the Olam Ein Sof (World of Infinity) where we then would see the creature in adhesion with the Creator who controls him, and that's it. There's nothing else. Everything depends on our vision. This vision through our senses, when we install them, could be the spiritual, eternal, and complete vision.
Yet even this form in which we exist as in a human, egoistic society, we nevertheless understand that altruism is worthwhile. It brings renunciation, the laws that organize some measure of equality to the society, the freedom to each individuality, and independence to each and every individual. Since without that (if we would let our ego erupt without boundaries) we would all come to a life that is very dangerous, unorganized and impossible.
Therefore, each society, each person, each state, shows itself as altruistic, that it is ready, and willing to bestow to the world, each one takes pride in it. We take pride in altruistic actions, not egoistic actions. I won a billion dollars. I can take pride in these billions of dollars, but we take more pride in the donation. We take pride when we are good, when we do a favor for humanity. This is not that we con humanity or lie to them but we do a favor. It is from within nature that people respect this.
Notwithstanding, no one can encourage the other to be an egoist. It is worthwhile for me that everyone be an altruist. Therefore, each and every one, for the sake of himself, wants to show himself towards the others as an altruist. Thus everyone shall treat him well, and he shall gain from this. Egoism needs the altruism to provide the means to thwart his fellow man, as a means to lie and to gain more. Therefore, the biggest egoists on the outside show themselves as altruists, and of course it’s worthwhile for them that everyone should be an altruist.
There's no objection that altruism shall spread over the world; at least no one objects openly. No one objects. This means that from the ten percent of altruists that we have in the world (the seeds of altruism, the roots we have within us, up to ten percent) and from in general the ninety percent of egoists of human society, from the beginning nobody is opposed to altruism. There are those who want it a bit more, those who want it a bit less. The latter would say, “O.K., let them do it and afterwards I’ll receive pleasure from this.” But total opposition to it can’t come from anyone because actually each and every one knows in his ego that he’ll have something good from it, if all the others were altruists.
Question: If there is no principle opposition to this how will the circulation bring the connection to people?
The enterprise of circulation of true altruism must find for itself external dressings, and manners suitable for advertisement, for PR, so that it will be accepted also by the ten percent of altruists, and also by the ninety percent of egoists, because it’s profitable, it's worthwhile for them. They’ll gain from it. What will they gain? Whatever they want, they'll gain. That’s it.
There must be a clever campaign of circulation. Again, it’s not such a problem. First of all, there’s help from Above because we’re going by the law of nature from Above, from the root. Secondly, toward the goal, (the branch) there's preparation of the ten percent, and lack of opposition in ninety percent.
Through a clever system of circulation, we can bring people to a situation that altruism shall be received. This is so today, especially, since there’s a general crisis and an understanding that each one depends on the other and we don’t know what to do, nor what’s going to be tomorrow, etc., although we know we will overcome and exist.
In fact, we have all the preparations to bring forth our action of circulation, i.e., of the necessity of altruism in human society, and it shall be received; gradually, but it shall be received. We can’t do this by force. We need to raise the consciousness of a person, so he shall understand that he himself wants this, even if he doesn’t want it. He is like us; we don’t want spirituality nor do we want altruism.
It is as if we agree to let Him do it to us in some form, although we fear that He’ll do it to us. There are preparations from Above, from our side and also on the part of those we go to. So everything really depends only upon us, in our way of circulation, in the distribution of the media, and method, to be done correctly, i.e., in the proper dressing.
Question: We are as the upper one that needs to operate the ten percent of altruists which in turn have to influence the entire world?
I wouldn’t have said it this way. We have the method. When I say us, unfortunately, there are no others, there is no longer Rabbi Shimon, nor Baal HaSulam, no one else. What can we do? It’s us.
We have the method and we must work with the ten percent of altruists in a very, very, very meticulous and delicate way in order to unite them since each and every one of them is an egoist, and is very determined in his way. One says this way to bestow and the other says that way to bestow to the world. Each one is very egoistic in his way.
So we must bring them to the understanding that altruism is called "only what goes to the connection of the human society to (become) one." Altruism is only for this. If I want to help the whole continent with people starving to death and I bring them food, then it is not called “altruism.” Call it whatever you want, but it’s not altruism.
Altruism is an action which brings me to closer proximity with nature, with the Creator, to Bina. The main thing is the connection of all of the cells, of the entire society, together. Of course, it includes helping those who lack the things that are essential for life. But I make it more extreme and say that it is actions only to connect society. Only, in short, to connect Adam ha Rishonwith all of his complete structure.
The rest of the actions are not altruistic. It’s the ego that dresses up this way in each and every one. This is what we need to explain to all the various altruistic organizations, that what they want to do in order to preserve nature, chickens, whales in the sea, bears and so forth It is all without any use. It is not in the direction of the goal. It’s not going against the reason why we have such phenomena in the world.
The reason is that humans ruin the reality by being damaged and dispersed. There’s hatred instead of love between people. Only by raising of the consciousness of people to join together as one man and one heart in the love of fellow man, in one body called Adam ha Rishon, can humanity be helped and by lifting humanity to the eternal existence, complete existence.
This is what we have to explain to all of the altruistic organizations and it’s a problem and very hard work. If it would somehow be possible for us to explain these things to them, and that they could absorb it, then we could make some kind of worldwide, united organization. Do you realize what kind of force there is here? We are not speaking of millions, but tens of millions, who would connect to the same idea.
It depends upon the work, about the consciousness, then together with them to proceed to the more external part, to the egoists who from the beginning cannot object. They cannot object. This is especially true when there is such a great strength, then they cannot say that they are against this force. No one can say that. We don’t see it in nature to this day. They can, in some ways, hesitate to take a stand, but not to be against.
And then you can go to the media, government, all of the different organizations and begin to influence them and demand their participation, either by good or bad. Either you advertise that they’re with you or they aren’t, and it’s worthwhile for them. This way you gradually receive forces that can correct society, to raise the awareness. Again, in all of these actions there is not one action of coercion, not one, because this isn’t possible. Otherwise, it won’t be in the direction of the goal. The goal is to raise the awareness of each and every one to the height of Adam ha Rishon.
However, in such actions you have public opinion which, we know, is what determines, etc. You have here a whole spectrum of work. Therefore, I’ve written here that all of humanity is ready for this. It doesn’t understand itself to what extent it’s ready, and the problem is in those people who have this method and do not operate within the time (which is now ripe) that commands them to.
Question (cont’d): If we approach people with a point in the heart, do they need to receive it through the mind? Why will people who don’t have the point in the heart agree to this?
This is a matter of the raising of consciousness, the development. If these people have the inclination to be altruistic, meaning, to care about benefiting the world because they themselves feel sorrow because the world feels bad, then we can explain to them in a more rooted fashion what happens here. To explain why this evil exists and what the reason for this is.
For example, I see that bears are in sorrow and they don’t feel good. All of humanity needs now to come and help my bears, because I feel that they feel bad and I don't want to feel bad and I want the bears to feel good. Humanity should feel like me, that the bears feel bad and this is a problem with the whole world, like the ozone layer or whatever, each one with his own trip.
We only need to show, to open for the world, for the person, the organization, to open the vision a bit and to explain that the reason is not the bears, nor the forests nor the ozone layer, not even the coal and oil we burn, but the problem is more rooted. The problem is the behavior of man with nature; that by his thoughts he corrupts nature. And then show how it works.
I don’t think that this work is easy but it certainly can already be fulfilled through science and also by many people who already understand and support this. And if we convince these altruistic organizations with this, we would be able to receive great strength. I hope it could be this way. We will see…
Besides that, it doesn’t deter us from another path of work, that of going straight to other organizations and different lines of media, and in a straight manner to approach the whole world. That is one of them, since here we are speaking of altruists and altruistic organizations throughout the world.
A channel for the whole world should be opened that always speaks only about the general problems of the world, not the new problems but about the root problems, i.e., where does it come from and why does it happen? This would be in order to give a person the connection between the cause and outcome. We would begin to show him to what extent these things are dependent one on the other, about what the root of the problem is and why we exist this way and what the solution could be. We’ve tried this way and that way and where did we come to?
In this way you educate the person and you bring him to self-awareness from this knowledge that he sees. He gradually decides what needs to be done. He comes to the same outcome by himself that you would like him to come to. Otherwise it won’t work. It is only in this way. It’s education.
Question (cont’d): Maybe we need to develop such a method in order to come to them through their lack.
Correct, this is what I said. Of course we need to come to them, and to explain that with those bears (if you want to save them) you need not bring them ice and food. You need to bring them other thoughts of humanity.
Of course if he has such sorrow from this, I won’t tell him that his sorrow is nothing and that he needs to care for humanity, and not for the bears. In response they will say let all of humanity burn. I care for the bears. This is how he feels. It’s obvious. We would say, “Guys, since you’re so worried by this, so I’m inviting you to the PR company to begin working on this method.”
The goal of the altruistic forces is to form altruistic values in society. Missing some words…The means to change our behavior from egoistic to altruistic is to change our priorities and value hierarchy. We need to be convinced that bestowal to society is much more important and worthwhile than receiving from it. In other words, each person must come to feel a much greater fulfillment from giving to society than from any egoistic acquisition. The only way to come to this is from public opinion.
I’m speaking not of the spiritual correction but of the corporeal correction. It shall be worthwhile for a person to give because by this he’ll receive more. Only the forms of giving and receiving change. The society should give a person an inner compensation that it is worthwhile for him to donate, to give because by this he’ll feel more fulfilled.
Again, we are still speaking about the egoistic level. We’re not going to correct anything on the spiritual level. It depends solely upon the person's development. This is done gradually, and whatever happens, is all right. It is not important. We’re talking about the egoistic form, as how one person treats the other, like the egoistic cells in a body. One must waive to the other in order to reach consciousness and in order to reach existence on a higher level.
Question: Is it worthwhile for the egoist that there shall be more altruists because this way each one will give, and in society we know the importance of the influence in society, and no one in society can say something against it because no one can say something negative. Why then isn’t it already developing and in action?
Now there are elections, you can come and show yourself and say, “For the benefit of society it’s worthwhile to do this and this.” What will happen?
Question (cont’d): What shall we say that is different?
There’s only one thing: I want you to be an altruist. That’s it.
Question: It’s the same question. If in society altruism is valued and in the Hollywood movies the main hero sacrifices himself and is ready to give his life for the truth, why doesn’t each individual receive the values from the society?
The individual doesn’t receive these values from society, because there is no compensation for this. There is no compensation for the altruistic actions from society. All in all, society does not value them. If we truly valued altruism instead of how everyone should receive an egoistic profit from it, we would treat each and every one who donates to society with respect, value, love.
An individual would feel it and for the sake of this he would have work. He would then be a slave to society. He couldn’t do anything else because he would received pleasure from this, and he would always try to receive this pleasure that he is valued. Just like a small child comes to you and says, "Look what I did. Look what I did." This is the way a person would be towards society. He then would be included in such an everlasting circle, in which he works only to fill himself from the society in performing altruistic actions in order to receive egoistic compensations, i.e., the appreciation, the medals, the respect, and all kind of things.
There is a special fault in this in order not to let a person to be satisfied by this, which is called "the drug of death." If you engage in altruistic activities, you are in accordance with the Upper Force and then it brings you to emptiness so that you will search for the higher compensation, adhesion with the Creator, for your altruistic actions.
You won’t grasp this matter immediately. It is deeper than what we’ve spoken about till now. This explains why these altruistic regimes break down (as if altruistic) like the kibbutz, like others. Did they do something bad?
The Upper Force didn’t let them grow, i.e., to be satisfied, by their altruistic activities, because then they would have never approached the Creator and come to the purpose of creation, to the correct eternal state. They would have been satisfied by this. A person would have entered this loop, i.e., "I live for society, I die for society.” You have this in gangs and in different sects, in small groups, in commandos. They say, "I don’t care; it’s O.K. to die since I receive such a support.” But they are in such a shell, in some kind of small sphere where within it they are nourished and exist and only for the sake of the group do they exist. It’s not the purpose, and it is corrupted so that you wouldn’t be satisfied by this.
Thus, also in Russia and also in the kibbutz, wherever there’s a regime that has to do something with altruism, it afterwards falls and cannot exist in spite of all the egoistic regimes. They somehow exist since they are not opposed to the root as are the altruistic regimes, since you take a higher spiritual idea and you bring it down and put it into the ego.
This is how the egoistic regimes are organized: as much as you earn, this is what you receive. If one doesn't earn, then let him die of hunger, and if the other does, then he becomes a millionaire. There’s no one for another. Why should I owe you?
In order to prevent all kinds of revolutionaries, that they might want to make and perhaps kill the rich, so they maintain them in a certain way….movies and bread. You have to give to the people so they’ll exist.
Question (cont’d): I think their awareness is not just to give to one another but to raise their awareness of altruism.
To raise the awareness you must raise it until there is a connection of each and every person with the Upper Force. All these things must be only aimed for. All of his work must be his. He needs to find his connection in a natural and personal way. He needs to cling to it himself.
It’s not education like we educate the younger generation, that we tell them yes and no. Here only the development, only when you open up the picture of the world, the reality for them, with the causes and the effects. A person himself does the summary. From this he must draw the conclusion, the outcome and continue with this.
You only open the data for him. It’s forbidden for you to bend them. What you should do is suit your level to the lower ones so as to enable him to develop in a free and completely independent way, otherwise you corrupt him. You give him the drug of death.
Otherwise, as Baal HaSulam says, it’s like the developed societies that come to the undeveloped nations, in Africa, or South America and begin to transform them into their form of leadership. By this they corrupt Africans and they don’t give them the ability to develop in their natural, free way. You see a certain tribe in Africa with the wigs like they have in England, and they speak in accordance with the English law, the barbarians there. Does this suit them? It’s a corruption. They first need to terminate this and then afterwards begin again, naturally, to develop.
Also, you should not approach humanity this way. You’re not even allowed to bring the spiritual law as an obligation. It should be just as the Creator, He is concealed, and only by the suffering He lets us think.
Question: How do we come to these altruists when we speak to them through this language of Kabbalah; moreover, should one be in attainment in order to correct society?
It could not be that the organization that leads this method is not in attainment. How else could it be? According to what? Can you build a method according to your wisdom?
Question (cont’d): You show it in a very universal language, there is no word about Godliness, nor Bina (intelligence), nor about Israel, but when you open it, it does exist…
Well it’s not a document that I will show before the UN or something. It's just a paper. How does Baal HaSulam write in The Last Generation? Does he mention the Creator, Israel, or spirituality?
Question (cont’d): When we, who are not in attainment, learn a bit about the language of Kabbalah, we somehow, by the language of Kabbalah, understand these messages. How can we pass it on to those who don't understand?
Probably you do not yet understand it enough to know how to pass it on. We’ll learn together.
Public opinion is the only means to facilitate this goal because the most important thing for every person is the appreciation of society. Humans are built in such a way that receiving the sympathy of society is the purpose of life. A person he tends to deny that what pushes him is his desire to receive from society this praise.
No one wants to say that he is an egoist and he wants to draw attention from society. I can say that I am a thief, a murderer, but to say that I work in order to receive praise from society? No, I won't say that because it’s a straight strike upon my ego. “I work so that people will look at me and say that I’m great, that I’m a hero.” No one will say this, but everyone works only for this and no one will admit that this is what he wants.
This element is so intrinsic that everyone denies that the purpose of every action is to acquire society's appreciation. The question of our motivation for action catches us off guard. We might claim that we are motivated by curiosity or even money, but we would not admit to the real incentive—the recognition of society! This shows that this is the most important thing for him.
I cannot admit that I work only to seem nice in the eyes of another. I don’t even mind saying something else, only not this. It is true that money, and all that I earn and all that I do, is only to appear to myself and to society in the best and the most successful way. If there was not this pride towards society, actually dependency upon appreciation of the society, a person would not have risen at all from the level of beast.
Question: There is awareness that everything is a matter of propaganda. If I had a large amount of money to spend on circulation, would it not change the thinking of society?
No, because for this you need mastery, not money. This happens to the extent that an organization wishes to work for the benefit of the world, and has the mastery of how to do that and is truly in accordance with society in order to raise society and to move it forward another step. There should be accordance between it and what it bestows to society, and between the society that is willing to receive this and willing to move forward another step toward the goal. Then it will receive all the resources it needs. It is very simple.
If there isn't, then it is a sign that they have not yet found the correct line between this organization, the society and the goal—which is adhesion with the Creator, that they are not within “Israel, Torah, the Creator" as one. Otherwise, the Upper Law would have arranged for them all things needed.
