211- Man

The Zohar, Beresheet Bet, Item 81

1) The face of man is from the Chazeh and above.

2) From the Chazeh and below there is no face of man, but only three faces, which are ox, eagle, and lion.

3) The souls of people are from the Chazeh and below, yet they are called “the quality of man” because they ascend and are included in the “face of a man” from the Chazeh and above, as a stretched Vav. This is the meaning of “You are called ‘man,’ and not the nations of the world.”

4) Before the three faces, ox, eagle, lion, ascend to be included in the face of a man, they, too, elicit offshoots into BYA. These are “animals,” “birds,” and “beasts.” Afterward, they ascend and are included in the face of a man, and from all of them, the soul of Adam HaRishon was born.

It follows that Adam includes all of them. Subsequently, they descended to BYA, and since they were included in the face of a man, they are regarded as pure kinds, although they were parted and divided into many parts.

5) Both remained. The collective remains, which is the meaning of “the spirit of man, which ascends upward,” and also the parts, as in “the spirit of the beast, which descends downward.” They were divided into their parts as they were before the ascent.

6) After the sin of Adam HaRishon, called “man without merit,” meaning that he does not want to ascend but to draw from above downward, from this extend people’s impure spirits, which derive from the filth of the serpent.
