234- Reality and the Existence of Reality

Example: A living baby is alive. This is called “reality.” On the other hand, we see that his life depends entirely on nourishment. If the baby is not given the nourishment he needs, he will die. It follows that from the perspective of the existence of reality, he must always be sustained, as in “Who renews by His goodness each day the work of creation.”

Concerning Zivugim [couplings], meaning the soul with the body. The soul is called “good inclination,” and the body is called “evil inclination.” They are two opposites: One is a desire to bestow, and one wants to receive. The choice is given to man to force the evil inclination to change its quality and work in order to bestow. The Creator makes this Zivug [coupling], as in “Were it not for the Creator’s help, he would not overcome it.”

The question was that if the Creator created the world, then there are no novelties. Rather, He only sustains it. Or were new worlds created, as our sages said, “The righteous build worlds each day”? If this is so then the Creator does not create new things.

The answer to this is that even now He is making Zivugim, meaning that even now He creates new worlds and new souls, but this, too, depends only on us, for we were given the choice to make Zivugim.

Night is the time of work, and morning is regarded as “after the work,” when one obtains the results from the work. At that time, there was one who was lame and one who was blind. This is as Raba said, “I beseech you, do not inherit a double Hell” because the evil inclination revokes the good inclination and the good inclination the evil inclination. Rather, this requires the help of the Creator, as in “Were it not for the Creator’s help, he would not overcome it.”

The question was that if He created once then there are no novelties in creation, only sustenance. The answer is that there are novelties from the perspective of the souls, and this is called a “Zivug to beget new souls.”
