258- Who Is Rich?

Adar Bet Tav-Shin-Chaf-Bet, March 1962

“Who is rich? Rabbi Yossi says, ‘Anyone who has a toilet next to his table’” (Shabbat 25b).

A “table” means a meal. When one receives pleasure, it is regarded as a meal, that he is dining.

Concerning having a toilet next to the table, the toilet is a place intended for extraction of the waste within us. That person, soon after the reception of the pleasure, sorts out the part that he receives for the sake of the Creator, and what is not for the sake of the Creator, he excretes as waste.

He receives pleasure only in order to sustain the faith, which is regarded as “the herdsmen of Abraham’s cattle.” Then, he remains with his wealth because he always has vitality and pleasure, since departure is precisely when one becomes a fool and receives for himself, not for the sake of the Creator. At that time, he loses what he is given. Hence, he remains poor.

But when one examines oneself and ejects the waste, he remains with his wealth, meaning pleasures, and does not lose it.
