The Body Knows

An allegory by Baal HaSulam in "A Speech for the Completion of the Zohar"

When the whole body thinks
That one of its organs
Can serve and please it,
That organ immediately knows

The thought

And provides the intended pleasure.

Similarly, if a certain organ thinks and senses
That its place is too narrow,
The entire body instantly knows
Its thought and sensation,
And moves it to a place of comfort.

However, if it should happen
That a certain organ
Is detached from the body,
They become two separate entities,
And the body no longer
Knows the needs
Of that separate organ.
And likewise, the organ doesn't know
The body's thoughts
Through which to serve it.

And should a doctor come
And reattach the organ to the body as before,
Then the organ will once again know
The thoughts and needs
Of the whole body
And the whole body will know once more
The needs of the organ.
