A Short Dictionary of Kabbalistic Terms

10 Sefirot – 10 properties of the soul

125 Levels – Transformation of properties from egoism to altruism and attainment of the Upper world, the Divine Providence, whose only property is absolute bestowal. There are five basic levels defined as “worlds”. Each world consists of five main Partzufim. All the Partzufim include five sub-levels called “Sefirot”. In all: 5 worlds x 5 Partzufim x 5 Sefirot = 125 levels.

1995 – From this year people begin to feel the desire for attainment of the Upper world.

Five Levels of Desire – The creation that the Creator put into existence consists of five levels of desire.

600,000 souls – fragments of the only creation, the general soul called “Adam”.

620 levels – The degrees of correction of the soul’s desires.

6,000 years –. The period of correction of souls on Earth starting with Adam. The levels of the worlds BYA (Beria, Yetzira, Assiya)

7,000 years – The level of the world of Atzilut.

8,000 years – The level of the Partzuf SAG.

9,000 years – The level of the Partzuf AB.

10,000 years – The level of the Partzuf Galgalta.

Adam- The general creation, general soul.

Adam Kadmon - The first world, overall Providence.

Animate Soul – Life force in a biological body.

Ari – The abbreviation of the Ashkenazi Rav Itzhak, full name Itzkak Luria Ashkenazi (1534-1572).The founder of the Lurian School of Kabbalah, the modern method of attaining the Upper world (16th century).

Assiya – The lowest world that includes our world.

AHP – the desire to receive in the creation, soul

Atzilut – The world of control and correction.

Baal HaSulam – (the second name Yehuda Leib Alevi Ashlag (1885-1955) - the author of the modern method of attaining the Upper world , the author of the commentary on the “Zohar” and all works of Ari.

BYA - Beria, Yetzira, Assiya (the worlds surrounding the human soul)

Bina – the property of bestowal in creation

Beria – The world of bestowal.

Book of Creation (Sefer Yetzira) – An ancient Kabbalistic book (18th century B.C.).

Breaking of the Vessels – Loss of the intention for the sake of bestowal.

Creation – Desire to receive pleasure Galgalta.

Creator – Desire to bestow delight, property of bestowal.

Delight – Sensation of the light.

Egoism – Desire (intention) to receive pleasure (for oneself).

End of Correction – Correction of all desires of Adam.

First Restriction – Cessation of egoistical reception of pleasure.

Freedom of Will – The only force of personal advancement to similarity to the Divine force.

G”E – The desires of bestowal.

Gematria – The numerical value of properties of corrected desire.

HaVaYaH – 4 stages of the straight light emanation for completion of the creation.

Idolatry – Perception of all occurrences as not coming from one Divine force.

Incarnation – Correction of the soul.

Inner Light – The light that fills the soul, desire, creation.

Intention – Desire directed “for the sake of oneself or someone else”.

Kabbalah – The method of gradually becoming similar to the Divine force in the property of bestowal.

Kabbalist – The person who practically realizes the method of Kabbalah on himself.

Keter – Desire to bestow in creation.

Kli – Will to receive pleasure in creation.

Klipah (pl. Klipot) – Intention to use the Divine force for one’s sake and against others.

Knowledge – Attainment of causes and effects of the perceived reality.

Language of Branches – The use of words of our world for description of the Upper world.

Malchut – Desire to receive delight in creation.

MAN – Desire to be corrected.

Masach – Anti-egoistical force, intention to give pleasure, bestow.

NaRaNHaY (Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Haya, Yechida) – The five lights in creation.

Nefesh – Minimal spiritual attainment, the smallest light in creation.

Neshama – The light of the second level.

Our World – Sensation without a screen.

Partzuf – Spiritual object that consists of ten Sefirot

Property of Bestowal - The intention for the sake of bestowal (regardless upon whom).

Rabash – The abbreviation of Rav Baruch Shalom, full name – Baruch Shalom Alevi Ashlag (1906-1991), the author of the book "Shlavei Sulam" ("Steps of the Ladder" in Hebrew) – a detailed description of man's ascend to the Spiritual world.

Rashbi – Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar (3rd century A.C.).

Reflected Light – Intention to be similar to the Divine force.

Second Restriction – Prohibition to use desire to receive

Screen – Anti-egoistical force, intention to give pleasure, bestow.

Sixth Sense – The soul, desire to bestow.

Soul – Human desire to achieve similarity to the Upper force.

Spiritual – The property of bestowal.

Spiritual Ascent – Development of properties of bestowal.

Spiritual Gene (Reshimo) – Unrealized state of bestowal.

Spiritual World – That which is felt in desire to bestow.

Still, Vegetative, Animate, Human – The four levels of desire.

Surrounding Light – The light that desires to penetrate creation as well as the light that is destined to transform egoistical desire into altruistic one.

Talmud Eser Sefirot (TES) – ("The Book of Ten Sefirot" in Hebrew), the book of Baal HaSulam (20th century), the main textbook of Kabbalah students

The Book of Zohar (The Book of Splendor) – A collection of wisdom about the Universe (3rd century A.C.).

The Upper Light – Pleasure from bestowal.

The Upper World – That which man feels in his will to bestow.

Tree of Life – The principal textbook on Kabbalah authored by the Ari (16th century).

Vessel (Kli), Creation – Desire to receive pleasure.

World – Creation’s perception of its own state.

World of Infinity – Unlimited reception of the light.

Yechida – The biggest light in creation.

Zeir Anpin (ZA) – Small state of the creation.
