How can we perceive the Upper World?

They say that opposites attract, and birds of a feather fly together, but Kabbalah teaches us something far deeper. To understand we need to know the difference between the physical and spiritual world. In the physical world we can take two very different objects, say a pencil and an apple, place them side by side and accurately state that they are close to each other. This is not the case in the spiritual world.

In the spiritual world there is no time and no space. What exists there cannot cease to exist. It is not a world of discrete objects. The Upper World is a world of abstract forces, qualities or attributes, like the qualities of the inner life of a person. An attribute is a property of feeling, more precisely: an intention.

In spirituality two things are considered distant if they possess different qualities and are close if they possess similar qualities. If however they have the exact same quality they are in fact one and the same thing.

Just as a radio is only able to receive signals coming from outside because it has a device that can produce an inner wave with similar properties as the outer one, we need to develop in ourselves a mechanism that can likewise tune to spiritual qualities.

Only to the degree that we develop these like intentions do we attain the Upper Governing Force and gain the opportunity to direct our destiny.
