They are bonded with the force of Love, the only law that exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG SCANS THE FACES OF HIS STUDENTS.<br>RABBI FELDMAN IS SITTING IN ONE CORNER, LISTENING ATTENTIVELY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Creator broke this one unified soul, and now we have to restore that union by ourselves. What for?! He wants us to be happy, doesn&#8217;t He? Why did He cast us into this crazy world, separated into nations, races, rich and poor, Jews and non-Jews, what for?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(stopping in front of Aaron):&nbsp;<\/em>He wanted us to become His equals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aaron:<\/strong>&nbsp;I don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>Not His slaves, but His equals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aaron&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(frantically):&nbsp;<\/em>I still don\u2019t get it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;When you bathe in the Light, when you are completely filled with it, what else do you desire?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aaron:<\/strong>&nbsp;To be inside the Light all the time. What\u2019s wrong with that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>He doesn&#8217;t want to turn us into slaves of the Light. He wants us to become free, to be truly equal to Him. What good are we to Him as mindless beings He can bend as He wishes? He wants free humans by His side, who voluntarily decide to be by His side, to become equals, friends, rather than slaves. Equals! How can this be done?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG STOPS AND LOOKS AROUND THE CLASSROOM.<br>EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR HIM TO CONTINUE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;There is just one way: to break the unified soul into small, individual pieces, clothe them in bodies of this world, plunge them into all that egoism, that hatred, make them His opposites so that from this reality they would return to Him by themselves. Independently! They need to wish to rise up from this blackness back to Him by themselves and willingly live according to His law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SILENCE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;How can this be accomplished?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG&#8217;S HOME. NIGHT.<br>RAV ASHLAG IS WRITING.<br>NEAT LINES APPEAR ON THE PAPER.<br>WE CAN HEAR RAV ASHLAG WHISPERING:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; \u201cHow can this be accomplished?! How can we live according to His Law if we are born as wild beasts, absolutely opposite to Him? He is the Light of the world, and we, on the other hand, are at the lowest, grimiest point, living only for ourselves! How can we rise toward the Creator?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A QUIET KNOCK ON THE DOOR. EVERYBODY IS ASLEEP. YEHUDA ANSWERS THE DOOR.<br>THE COACHMAN IS STANDING OUTSIDE HOLDING&nbsp;<em>THE BOOK OF ZOHAR&nbsp;<\/em>IN HIS HANDS.<br>YEHUDA LOOKS AT HIM AND ASKS WITHOUT HESITATION:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; When?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The coachman:<\/strong>&nbsp;Tonight, an hour ago. The last thing he said to me was to give this to you right away, my esteemed Rav.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HE HANDS OVER&nbsp;<em>THE BOOK OF ZOHAR<\/em>&nbsp;AND A NOTE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The coachman&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(in haste):&nbsp;<\/em>Well, I must be on my way; I don&#8217;t want to leave him all alone. HE WIPES HIS EYES WITH A MUDDY GLOVE, SMEARING DIRT ACROSS HIS FACE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The coachman:&nbsp;<\/strong>He seemed so much bigger when he was alive. It appears that you, dear Rav, added a few days to his life.&nbsp;<em>(Then, almost cheerfully<\/em>) He died peacefully. He was smiling when he passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HE STOPS, RUFFLES THE GLOVES IN HIS HANDS, AND LOWERS HIS GAZE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The coachman:&nbsp;<\/strong>What will I do now, without him? All by myself\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE COACHMAN TURNS AWAY AND WEARILY WALKS DOWN THE STAIRS.<br>RAV ASHLAG OPENS THE NOTE.<br>HIS EYES RUN ALONG THE LINES. HE READS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; \u201cThe Creator is taking me to Him now. But before He does, He gave me a precious gift, a chance to read such a great book! It&#8217;s a book about my soul, about the whole world, about the path to Him, which everyone will have to walk. He is inviting us to come to His feast. He has fixed a table for us, but we didn\u2019t show up. Tell them about it. Be patient with them, as with little children. Tell them what bliss the Creator has in store for us. I am grateful to you for staying here to accomplish this task. I have faith in you, our beloved Rav Yehuda. We had to meet, and I had to tell you what I did. My poor, poor father doesn&#8217;t know how magnificent the Creator truly is!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A PAIR OF HANDS WRAPS A DUVET AROUND RAV ASHLAG\u2019S SHOULDERS.<br>HE TURNS AROUND. SCRATCHING HIMSELF ON THE SHARP EDGES OF THE HOLE, HE KEEPS FALLING ON AND ON, AND THE ECHO MULTIPLIES HIS SCREAMS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Aaaaah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HE LANDS FLAT ON A STONE FLOOR INSIDE A DIMLY LIT HALL.<br>IMMEDIATELY, AN UNSEEN FORCE LIFTS HIM UP, TURNS HIM ON HIS HEELS, AND PUSHES HIM FORWARD. HE MAKES A FEW AUTOMATIC STEPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANOTHER LINE APPEARS ON THE PAPER:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; \u201cYou have no idea who you really are!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TORCHES ARE BURNING ON ALL FOUR SIDES OF THE HALL.<br>SUDDENLY RAV ASHLAG SEES A GOLDEN THRONE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM AND A MAN SITTING ON IT, HIS FACE CLOAKED IN DARKNESS. RAV ASHLAG GRABS ONE OF THE TORCHES AND RAISES IT ABOVE HIS HEAD. PHARAOH&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#f35\">35<\/a><\/strong>] IS SITTING ON THE THRONE.<br>PHARAOH HAS RAV ASHLAG&#8217;S FACE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG\u2019S ROOM.<br><em>THE BOOK OF ZOHAR&nbsp;<\/em>IS OPEN TO THE PORTION \u201cIN THE END,\u201d PRECISELY ON THE LINE THAT READS, \u201cAND HE FACED THE PHARAOH OF EGYPT.\u201d<br>HE CAN READ A FEW WORDS IN A CHILD\u2019S HANDWRITING:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; \u201cFace him and defeat him.\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#f36\">36<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE NEXT DAY. RAV ASHLAG STOPS BEFORE CHAIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>You asked how can we return to the Creator?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;Yes. I couldn&#8217;t sleep. I thought about it all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>Do you feel that your state is unbearable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;Yes, I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;I feel that there is no end to these sufferings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>Do you know why you are suffering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;I don\u2019t know. Everything is so empty, tasteless, that nothing brings me joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(sharply):&nbsp;<\/em>You are to blame for all of this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(in astonishment):&nbsp;<\/em>Me?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>Yes, you, who else? It&#8217;s you who won\u2019t let Him manifest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;But I love the Creator!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:&nbsp;<\/strong>You love yourself, not the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chaim:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s not my experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(pointing his finger at him sharply):&nbsp;<\/em>This is the first stage that we have to go through.&nbsp;<em>(He takes a step back and surveys the class<\/em>) We need to understand that we are not righteous at all, we are liars and thieves who love no one but ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A FLASH OF LIGHT. PHARAOH&#8217;S CHAMBER.<br>PHARAOH WITH THE FACE OF RAV ASHLAG IS STARING AT THE RAV FROM HIS GOLDEN THRONE UNDER THE LIGHT OF TORCHES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG&#8217;S VOICE:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; It\u2019s not given to just anyone. Nobody enters there by chance. Only those whose heart is broken enter there, those who can\u2019t bear to live without an answer to the question about what they are living for. The truth can be revealed only to such people. Only they can endure it. Only they will be allowed to descend into the abyss, the place where no one ever dared look: into the self, into the pitch darkness of egoism. And what do they see there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A FLASH OF LIGHT.<br>A PHARAOH WITH THE FACE OF RAV ASHLAG IS SITTING ON THE THRONE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG&#8217;S VOICE:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The awful grin of your master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHARAOH SMILES.<br>HE POINTS AT A GOLDEN CHAIR NEXT TO HIS THRONE.<br>AN UNSEEN FORCE PULLS RAV ASHLAG FORWARD AND AN INSTANT LATER, HE&#8217;S SITTING NEXT TO PHARAOH.<br>HE TRIES TO STAND UP BUT GOLDEN SHACKLES BIND HIS HANDS AND FEET TO THE CHAIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAV ASHLAG&#8217;S VOICE:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Pharaoh is our essence. We work all our lives to satisfy no one but him. He rules us. He is our nature, our &#8220;I.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHARAOH ON THE THRONE IS LAUGHING.<br>HE REMOVES A GOLDEN RING FROM ONE FINGER AND OFFERS IT TO RAV ASHLAG. IT ATTACHES ITSELF TO HIS FINGER AS IF GLUED BY A POWERFUL FORCE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLASSROOM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aaron:<\/strong>&nbsp;But isn&#8217;t Pharaoh a man? It says in the Torah\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Torah doesn&#8217;t speak of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aaron:<\/strong>&nbsp;I don&#8217;t get it. Was there no Abraham, no Moses, the story of the Egyptian exile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rav Ashlag:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you read the Torah like that, you are killing it and yourself. There is not a single word there about this world. There are no people. The Torah speaks about forces that can guide you back to the Creator. We can&#8217;t wait. We have been marked by the Creator, and we can&#8217;t help it. We want to find the spiritual Land of Israel while living in the geographical point called \u201cthe Land of Israel.\u201d It will give us additional strength, it will!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Baruch:<\/strong>&nbsp;I wish it would happen already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#32\">32<\/a><\/strong>] In Hebrew, both \u201cRav\u201d and \u201cRabbi\u201d can be used as a title before someone\u2019s name. But since the term \u201cRabbi\u201d has a more orthodox connotation than \u201cRav,\u201d the latter will be used here to denote rabbis who are also known as Kabbalists. Exceptions are Kabbalists who are already known as rabbis, such as Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and Rabbi Akiva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#33\">33<\/a><\/strong>] A person leaves the ark when the pure thoughts with which he has lived thus far prepare him for birth, after nine months and one day. This does not refer to physical time, but to a spiritual state: A person contemplates bestowal and love, lives in these thoughts like a fetus in the womb, and grows stronger. When the initial structure of one\u2019s soul is designed, it is time to leave the ark and work (receive) with the egoistic desires, which have thus far been put aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#34\">34<\/a><\/strong>] A descent is a loss of contact with spirituality. It happens when a new portion of egoism is added to a person, which must now be dealt with and corrected. Our mission is to shorten the duration of these descents as much as possible, but they cannot be avoided altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#35\">35<\/a><\/strong>] Pharaoh is the egoistic force of self-love that governs a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#36\">36<\/a><\/strong>] A person who sees Pharaoh is one who feels that force within, and oneself as a servant of that force. Defeating Pharaoh means aiming one\u2019s internal forces toward bestowal and love, rather than toward self-gratification. When that happens, the Creator will take Pharaoh\u2019s place within that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#37\">37<\/a><\/strong>] Rav Baruch Shalom, the Rabash, Rav Yehuda Ashlag\u2019s firstborn son and successor. The Rabash was authorized to pass on the tenets of the spiritual work\u2014which was thus far conveyed only orally\u2014by way of personal letters. The Kabbalah group, Bnei Baruch (sons of Baruch), is named after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#38\">38<\/a><\/strong>] Descents, where the Kabbalist completely forgets everything, are sometimes given preceding a great ascent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#39\">39<\/a><\/strong>] The 2nd month in the Hebrew calendar, usually between October and November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#40\">40<\/a><\/strong>] Escaping at night: When one realizes that one is completely under the rule of egoism, that sensation is called \u201cnight.\u201d The desire to run, along with the inability to do it, produce a prayer, a litany, a demand for help. In Kabbalah, Moses is the force that pulls one out of the reign of egoism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\"><\/a><a><\/a>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/eng\/content\/view\/full\/110087#42\">42<\/a><\/strong>] \u201cFather and Mother\u201d are the force of bestowal and love within a person.
