{"id":11599,"date":"2025-12-11T14:11:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T14:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.kabbalah.info\/?post_type=book&#038;p=11599"},"modified":"2025-12-11T14:11:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T14:11:22","slug":"concerning-the-minyan-ten-in-the-synagogue","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/www.kabbalah.info\/en\/concerning-the-minyan-ten-in-the-synagogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerning the\u00a0Minyan\u00a0[Ten in the synagogue]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>251. <strong>Concerning the\u00a0<em>Minyan<\/em>\u00a0[Ten in the synagogue]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRabbi Yochanan said, \u2018When the Creator comes to the synagogue and does not find there ten, He immediately becomes angry, as was said, \u2018Why have I come and there is no man, I called and no one answered?\u2019\u2019\u201d (<em>Berachot<\/em>&nbsp;6b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should ask, 1) What should be done? Should people wait outside until ten have gathered, and then come into the synagogue? 2) Where is the proof in the verse that ten are required?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should also understand what our sages said, \u201cRabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi said, \u2018One who walks along the way without company should engage in Torah, as was said, \u2018For they are a graceful accompaniment to your head\u2019\u2019\u201d (<em>Iruvin<\/em>&nbsp;54). We should understand what it means that we need company when we set out on the road, and that if one has no company, engaging in Torah will be as beneficial to him as company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is known that man was created with the will to receive. This separates him from&nbsp;<em>Dvekut<\/em>&nbsp;[adhesion] with Him, for specifically through equivalence of form, called \u201cdesire to bestow,\u201d is one rewarded with&nbsp;<em>Dvekut<\/em>&nbsp;with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompany\u201d means&nbsp;<em>Dvekut<\/em>, as it is written, \u201cOne who walks along the way,\u201d meaning one who walks on the path of the Creator but has not been rewarded with&nbsp;<em>Dvekut<\/em>&nbsp;with the Creator, should engage in Torah, for by its&nbsp;<em>Segula<\/em>&nbsp;[power\/remedy\/virtue], he will be rewarded with&nbsp;<em>Dvekut<\/em>&nbsp;with the Creator, as our sages said, \u201cOne should always engage in Torah&nbsp;<em>Lo Lishma<\/em>&nbsp;[not for Her sake], for the light in it reforms him\u201d (<em>Pesachim<\/em>&nbsp;50b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerning prayer, it is known that we should pray mainly about the exile of the&nbsp;<em>Shechina<\/em>&nbsp;[Divinity], called&nbsp;<em>Malchut<\/em>, which is the tenth&nbsp;<em>Sefira<\/em>&nbsp;in the ten&nbsp;<em>Sefirot<\/em>, and whose essence is faith in His guidance, that He leads the world in a manner of good and doing good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is impossible to see the goodness of the Creator before a person purifies his desire from receiving for himself, since there is the&nbsp;<em>Tzimtzum<\/em>&nbsp;[restriction] on the will to receive, which is concealment on His guidance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the meaning of what our sages said, \u201cYou are called \u2018man,\u2019 and not the nations of the world,\u201d since their sole aim is to receive for themselves. This is the meaning of \u201cWhen the Creator comes to the synagogue and does not find ten men there,\u201d meaning that there will be someone there who will pray for the quality of \u201cten,\u201d which is the&nbsp;<em>Shechina<\/em>, so she will rise from her exile, for by engaging with the desire to bestow, one raises the&nbsp;<em>Shechina<\/em>&nbsp;from the dust. But when each one cares for his personal needs, the Creator is angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He brings evidence from the verse, as was said, \u201cWhy have I come and there is no man\u201d to care for the needs that pertain to the quality of \u201cman,\u201d and cares only to satisfy the needs that pertain to the quality of a beast? Rather, one should always answer to himself for whom he spends his time and for whom he exerts, for he should be concerned only with the needs of the collective.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>251.
