We Have Forgotten the Good"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cA certain man once gave his slave to his friend to teach him a thousand different ways of making pap (various foods), but he taught him eight hundred. So he summoned him to a lawsuit before the rabbi. The rabbi said, \u2018Our fathers said, \u2018We have forgotten the good,\u2019\u2019\u201d (meaning they already saw, but now they have forgotten, \u201cbut we have never even seen the good!\u201d) (<em>Nedarim<\/em>&nbsp;50b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should ask, Were our fathers so immersed in worldly lusts that Rabbi said, \u201cWe have forgotten the good, but we have never even seen it\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should interpret that \u201cthousand\u201d pertains to&nbsp;<em>Hochma<\/em>&nbsp;[wisdom], as in \u201cI will teach you wisdom.\u201d \u201cEight hundred\u201d means&nbsp;<em>Bina<\/em>, as it is written, \u201cThe days of&nbsp;<em>Bina<\/em>, eight days,\u201d and the&nbsp;<em>Sefirot<\/em>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em>Bina<\/em>&nbsp;are hundreds, meaning&nbsp;<em>Mochin<\/em>&nbsp;<em>de<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Neshama<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat man who gave his slave\u201d means that he gave himself to be a servant of the Creator, for \u201chis friend\u201d means \u201cYour friend and your father\u2019s friend,\u201d that the Creator will give him&nbsp;<em>Mochin<\/em>&nbsp;<em>de<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Hochma<\/em>. Yet, he was rewarded with only&nbsp;<em>Mochin<\/em>&nbsp;<em>de<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Neshama<\/em>, which is&nbsp;<em>Bina<\/em>, and \u201chundreds\u201d implies eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi said about this, \u201cOur fathers said, \u2018We have forgotten the good.\u2019\u201d That is, at the time of the Temple, there was&nbsp;<em>Mochin<\/em>&nbsp;<em>de<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Hochma<\/em>, called \u201cthe moon in its fullness.\u201d But after the ruin of the Temple, the&nbsp;<em>Mochin<\/em>&nbsp;<em>de<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Hochma<\/em>&nbsp;departed.
