\u201cLend ear, O heavens, and let me speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The interpreters asked why concerning the heavens it is written, \u201cLend ear,\u201d and concerning the earth it is written, \u201chear.\u201d Also, why is it written in terms of speaking with regard to the heavens, and \u201cwords\u201d when it comes to the earth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The \u201cheavens\u201d are people whose engagements are all spiritual, and \u201cearth\u201d are those who engage in earthly matters. \u201cLend ear\u201d implies closeness, as though standing close to someone and telling him, \u201cListen to what I\u2019m telling you.\u201d But \u201chearing\u201d implies distance, as it is written, \u201cWe heard a rumor from afar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLend ear\u201d pertains to people who engage in spiritual matters, who are not far from the truth. \u201cSpeaking\u201d also pertains to them, as our sages said about the verse, \u201cThus shall you say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel.\u201d To the men, you shall say words as hard as tendons, but to the women\u2014soft speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maimonides says that it is forbidden to reveal the \u201ctruth,\u201d which is Lishma<\/em> [for Her sake], to women and children and uneducated people until they gain knowledge and acquire much wisdom. Then, that secret is revealed to them little by little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, the body does not agree to \u201cspeaking,\u201d which is words that are as hard as tendons, meaning Lishma<\/em>, working not in order to receive reward. But the body can agree to \u201csoft speaking,\u201d meaning Lo<\/em> Lishma<\/em> [not for Her sake]. For this reason, uneducated people and women need soft speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therefore, working people, who engage in spirituality, are permitted to be told to work Lishma<\/em> because they are not far from the matter of Lishma<\/em>.
