What Is the Fruit of a Citrus Tree, in the Work?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I heard on&nbsp;<em>Sukkot<\/em>&nbsp;Inter 1, September 27, 1942<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is written, \u201cAnd you shall take you on the first day the fruit of a citrus tree, branches of palm-trees, and boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook\u201d (Leviticus 23:40).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we should interpret \u201cfruit of a citrus tree\u201d: A tree is considered righteous, called a \u201ctree of the field.\u201d The \u201cfruit\u201d is the progeny of the tree, meaning the progeny of the righteous, which are the good deeds, which should be in the form of adornment in his tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom year to year\u201d means a whole year, which are \u201csix months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors.\u201d The wicked, however, are \u201clike the chaff which the wind drives away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBranches of palm-trees\u201d are two pans, which are the two&nbsp;<em>Heys<\/em>, the first&nbsp;<em>Hey<\/em>and the last&nbsp;<em>Hey<\/em>, by which one is rewarded with \u201cone golden pan of ten shekels, full of incense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kapot<\/em>&nbsp;[pans] mean&nbsp;<em>Kefia<\/em>&nbsp;[coercion], when one assumes the kingdom of heaven coercively. This means that even when reason disagrees, he goes above reason. This is called \u201ccoercive mating.\u201d&nbsp;<em>Tmarim<\/em>&nbsp;[palm trees] comes from the word&nbsp;<em>Morah<\/em>&nbsp;[fear], which is fear (by way of \u201cand God has made it that He will be feared\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, it is called&nbsp;<em>Lulav<\/em>&nbsp;[palm branch]. This means that before one is rewarded, he has two hearts. And this is called&nbsp;<em>Lo Lev<\/em>&nbsp;[no heart], meaning that the heart is not devoted solely to the Creator. When he is rewarded with the&nbsp;<em>Lo<\/em>[\u201cno\u201d or \u201cto Him\u201d], meaning a heart that is for the Creator, this is the&nbsp;<em>Lulav<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, one should say, \u201cWhen will my deeds come to be as the deeds of my fathers?\u201d Through it, one is rewarded with being a branch of the holy fathers, and this is the meaning of \u201cboughs of thick trees,\u201d which are the three myrtles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, at the same time, one should be in the form of \u201cwillows of the brook,\u201d tasteless and scentless. And one should delight in this work, even though he feels no flavor or fragrance in this work.
