Why We Say\u00a0LeChaim"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I heard during a Shabbat meal, portion&nbsp;<em>Acharei-Kedoshim<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Omer<\/em>&nbsp;Count 23, May 7, 1949<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said about saying&nbsp;<em>L\u2019Chaim<\/em>&nbsp;[to life\u2014cheers (when toasting a drink)] when drinking wine, that it is as our sages said, \u201cWine and life according to the sages and their disciples.\u201d This is perplexing: Why specifically according to our sages? Why not according to the uneducated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is that saying&nbsp;<em>L\u2019Chaim<\/em>&nbsp;implies a higher life. When we drink wine, we should remember that wine implies \u201cthe wine of Torah,\u201d a reminder that we should extend the light of Torah, called \u201clife.\u201d The corporeal life, however, is called by our sages, \u201cThe wicked, in their lives, are called \u2018dead.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, it is specifically our sages who can say \u201cwine and life.\u201d This means that only they are qualified to extend spiritual life. Uneducated people, however, have no tools for it, with which to extend. (And perhaps, \u201caccording to our sages\u201d means according to the view of our sages.
