I Do Swear"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Midrash Tanchuma<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>VaYera<\/em>: \u201cAnd he said, \u2018I do swear,\u2019 declares the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said to him, \u201cYou swore, and I swore that I would not come down from the altar until I say all that I must.\u201d He said to Him, \u201cSay, is this not what You said to me, \u2018Count the stars; if you can count them, so will be your descendants\u2019?\u201d He said to him, \u201cYes.\u201d He said to Him, \u201cFrom whom?\u201d He said to him, \u201cFrom Isaac.\u201d He said to Him, \u201cJust as when I had in my heart what to answer You and tell You, yesterday You said to me, \u2018through Isaac your descendants shall be named,\u2019 and now You tell me, \u2018Offer him there as a burnt offering,\u2019 and I restrained myself and did not answer You. Likewise, when Isaac\u2019s sons sin and put themselves in trouble, You will remember the tying of Isaac and will regard it as though his ashes are piled up on the altar, and You will forgive them and redeem them from their trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Creator said to him, \u201cYou said yours, and I will say Mine.\u201d Isaac\u2019s sons are destined to sin before Me and I will judge them in the beginning of the year. If they want Me to seek their merit and remember for them the tying of Isaac, let them blow before Me with a&nbsp;<em>Shofar<\/em>&nbsp;of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that we can extend ancestral merit only through work, which is the work in&nbsp;<em>Mitzvot<\/em>&nbsp;[commandments].
