Our sages said (Shabbat [Sabbath] 21a): \u201cWhat is Hanukkah? Our sages said, \u2018On the twenty-fifth of Kislev<\/em>, the days of Hanukkah, which are eight,\u2019\u201d etc., when Greeks entered the hall, defiled all the oils in the hall, etc., they checked but found only one jar of oil that was sealed with the seal of the high priest. It contained only enough to light for one day. A miracle happened and they lit with it for eight days. The following year, they were appointed as [days of] praise and gratitude, and the rule is that it is forbidden to use its light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGreeks\u201d means within reason, which is philosophy, meaning to adjust the Mitzvot<\/em> [commandments] to the intellect, such as a \u201crelease\u201d [from levirate marriage].<\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u201cHall\u201d is the mind and heart, which are the hall within man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOils\u201d are the Mitzvot<\/em> [commandments], as it is written, \u201coil for lighting,\u201d since the Torah is called \u201clight\u201d and the Mitzvot<\/em> are called \u201ccandle,\u201d as it is written, \u201cA candle is a Mitzva<\/em> [sing. for Mitzvot<\/em>], and the Torah is light.\u201d The light cannot shine without oil, for the Torah cannot shine if it has nothing on which to grip, meaning the oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOne jar of oil\u201d means that after the victory and the devotion that they had with the Greeks, they found that the matter of faith is \u201cone,\u201d as in \u201cHear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.\u201d \u201cOf oil\u201d means that this Mitzva<\/em> is signed by the seal of the high priest, whose quality is the quality of Hesed<\/em>. Hesed<\/em> means \u201cAs He is merciful, so you are merciful,\u201d implying for the sake of the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, this force suffices to light only one night, since the matter of faith must be renewed each time, as it is written, \u201cNew every morning; great is the faith in You.\u201d A miracle happened to them and that power of faith sufficed them for eight days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Praise and gratitude are only a miracle for spirituality; this is why it is forbidden to use its light, implying that it is only for spirituality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Hanukkah, December 1965 Our sages said (Shabbat [Sabbath] 21a): \u201cWhat is Hanukkah?
