236) \u201cIn the seventh month, on the tenth of the month,\u201d for \u201con the tenth\u201d is Malchut<\/em>. \u201cYou will torment your souls,\u201d since the matter depends on the soul because the light of Malchut<\/em> is called Nefesh<\/em> [soul], and Nefesh<\/em> is always Malchut<\/em>. For this reason, eating and drinking from the ninth of the month, which is Yesod<\/em>, is then more than on another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hochma<\/em> cannot be revealed unless harsh Dinim<\/em> appear with her, to shower on the heads of the wicked so they do not extend the Hochma<\/em> from above downward. This is the meaning of the five torments on Yom Kippur<\/em> [Day of Atonement], from which the Dinim<\/em> are extended to the heads of the wicked, for then Hochma<\/em> can be revealed. It is written, \u201cFor whatsoever soul that shall not be afflicted in that day shall be cut off from its people.\u201d It is so because if he did not receive these five torments to remove the wicked, the Hochma<\/em> will not be able to appear in the soul. And because the light of Hochma<\/em> is the light of life, it \u201cwill be cut off from its people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOn the tenth of the month\u201d is Malchut<\/em>, as there is the place of disclosure of Hochma<\/em>, for there is no disclosure of Hochma<\/em> in any Sefira<\/em> but Malchut<\/em>. For this reason, this correction must be established there\u2014that Dinim<\/em> will extend from her to the heads of the wicked when the Hochma<\/em> appears in her. This is why it is written, \u201cYou will torment your souls,\u201d for we must evoke in Malchut<\/em> the five torments from which these Dinim<\/em> are drawn out. The matter depends only on the Nefesh<\/em>, which is considered Malchut<\/em>, for only there is the place of disclosure of Hochma<\/em>, and nowhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, when the Dinim<\/em> appear in her, she can receive Hochma<\/em> from Yesod<\/em> de<\/em> ZA<\/em>, for there no fear of the wicked sucking from her anymore. For this reason, eating and drinking from the ninth of the month, Yesod<\/em>, is more than on other days, for thus Malchut<\/em> will be able to receive from Yesod<\/em> the Mochin<\/em> of illumination of Hochma<\/em>, called \u201ceating and drinking,\u201d more than on other days, as Malchut<\/em> receives only from Yesod<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the reason why on the Eve of Yom Kippur<\/em>, which is the ninth of the month, Yesod<\/em>, we should eat and drink plentifully. By receiving the five torments on Yom Kippur<\/em> she is fit to receive eating and drinking from Yesod<\/em>. In this way, the correction of the torment of the soul on Yom Kippur<\/em> illuminates in the correction of eating and drinking on the ninth of the month, as she is kept from the wicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, all who eats and drinks on the ninth, it is as though he tormented himself on the ninth and tenth, since the torment of the soul on the tenth illuminates on the Mochin<\/em> imparted on the ninth and keeps them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

237) On that day, every joy, every light, and every relinquishment in the worlds, which is atonement for sins, depends on upper Ima<\/em>, for all the fountains extend and come out from her, both illumination of Hochma<\/em> and illumination of Hassadim<\/em>. At that time all the candles light up, meaning the lights of fire in Malchut<\/em>, and illuminate in light and gladness until everything is perfumed. At that time all those Dinim<\/em> are in illumination because those Dinim<\/em> that extend from the five torments cause Hochma<\/em> to shine. Were it not for them, Hochma<\/em> would not appear. The Din<\/em> is not done; it only threatens. It is written about it, \u201cYou will torment yourself,\u201d to enable illumination of Hochma<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

238) Israel were not exiled from their land until they denied the Creator, as it is written, \u201cWe have no portion in David nor an inheritance in the son of Yishai [Jesse],\u201d since David is Malchut<\/em>. They said, \u201cWe have no portion in Malchut<\/em> [the kingship],\u201d and in another verse it is written, \u201cNow see your house, David,\u201d and Malchut<\/em> is called \u201cthe house of David,\u201d as it is written, \u201cO house of Jacob, come let us walk in the light of the Lord.\u201d The house of Jacob is as it is written, \u201cAnd I will glorify My house of glory.\u201d Jacob is Tifferet<\/em>, and a house of glory is Malchut<\/em>. Likewise, the house of David is Malchut<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cO house of Jacob, come let us walk in the light of the Lord,\u201d as it is written, \u201cAnd a river went out from Eden to water the garden.\u201d The river, ZA<\/em>, waters the garden, Malchut<\/em>. He planted the garden to play in it with the righteous who are in it. It is written about it, \u201cHouse of Jacob,\u201d Malchut<\/em>, \u201cCome let us walk in the light of the Lord,\u201d ZA<\/em>, who waters Malchut<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

239) It is written, \u201cBut on the tenth of the seventh month it is the day of atonement, a holy reading it shall be to you, and you will torment your souls.\u201d It is also written, \u201cAnd it shall be an everlasting statute unto you; in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month you will torment your souls.\u201d It does not write there, \u201cBut on the tenth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cbut\u201d comes to diminish, because it is written, \u201cAnd you will torment your souls on the ninth of the month in the evening. But on the tenth…\u201d The verse, \u201cAnd you will torment your souls\u201d depends on the \u201cBut on the tenth,\u201d diminishing the ninth of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

240) \u201cSeven days shall you eat unleavened bread [Matzot<\/em>], but on the first day you shall put away leaven from your houses.\u201d \u201cBut\u201d divides\u2014half is forbidden in eating unleavened bread, and half is permitted. Likewise, in the verse, \u201cBut on the tenth of the month,\u201d half of it is prohibition to eat and half is permission. Here, too, the text is divided, \u201cAnd you will torment your souls,\u201d since torment is only from midday onward, after the time of eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
