most ancient magical book,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn old person is one who has acquired wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children love to listen to legends<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because their imaginations can open them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

up to wonderful new ideas and truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they might not have known these ideas<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without hearing about them in legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And children who grow up<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and continue to see what others cannot,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

acquire more and more wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such people always remain like children, \u201cwise children,\u201d even as grownups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what The Book of Zohar teaches us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There once was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a great magician,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

kind, generous,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and goodhearted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But unlike all other good<\/p>\n\n\n\n

magicians in children\u2019s legends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

this magician was so very kind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he missed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

having someone to share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his goodness with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had no one to love or care for,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and no one to play with,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to be with,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or to think about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he longed for someone<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to know him and to care about him\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026because it\u2019s very sad to be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what did he do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought to himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know! I\u2019ll make a pebble,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a tiny one, but very beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will gently hold it and stroke it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and feel it always by my side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we will be together, the pebble and I, because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it\u2019s very sad to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He waved his magic stick, and CHACK!,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a pretty little pebble rested in the good magician\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stroked the smooth little pebble<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wrapped it lovingly in his warm palm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spoke lovingly to it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but the stone didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It just lay there in his hand,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

motionless and silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And worst of all,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it did not return his love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter what he did to it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the stone would not become friendly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or even react at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought, \u201cIs this the way to treat a good magician?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How come the sweet-looking pebble isn\u2019t responding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe there is something wrong with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps I should make more pebbles,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and maybe they will be friendlier<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and return my friendship?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the magician made<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more pebbles,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then larger stones: rocks, hills, mountains, the Earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and even the whole universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they were all like the first pebble:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they didn\u2019t move,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

didn\u2019t speak, and just<\/p>\n\n\n\n

didn\u2019t respond at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And once again he felt<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how sad it was to be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his sadness he wondered,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPerhaps I should make a plant instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, a very beautiful flower!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll water it, give it lots of fresh air,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

beam down warm sunshine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and play sweet music to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant will be so happy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then we\u2019ll both be happy because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it\u2019s very sad to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good magician waved his magic stick again, and CHACK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a pretty little flower appeared right<\/p>\n\n\n\n

next to his chair. With its rosy petals<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and long and gentle leaves, the flower<\/p>\n\n\n\n

looked exactly as he pictured it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The magician was so excited he began<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to skip and hop around it, and sang<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the most cheerful songs he knew. But<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the plant wouldn\u2019t dance with him; it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wouldn\u2019t sing, either. All it did was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

grow when he watered it, and shrivel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when he didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was not nearly enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for such a goodhearted magician, who<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wanted to give his heart and soul to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his friend, the flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, the magician wondered,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs this the way to treat a good magician?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How come this pretty little flower<\/p>\n\n\n\n

isn\u2019t responding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps I should make more flowers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they will return<\/p>\n\n\n\n

my friendship\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the magician made all kinds of plants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

meadows with carpets of red, yellow, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

blue flowers, groves and forests,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

vast savannas, and dense jungles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no matter what kind of plant<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he made, they all behaved just<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like the very first flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, the good magician<\/p>\n\n\n\n

was alone, and sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Realizing that the situation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

called for special action,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician sat on his magic thinking rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and thought,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and thought some more,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

until he had a wonderful idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he said out loud,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll make an animal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2026 what kind of animal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps a dog?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, a dog!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll make a cute little pup that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

will always be with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll take it for walks,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

play with it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and when I return<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to my castle,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the dog will jump for joy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wiggle its tail<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to greet me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes!\u201d the magician<\/p>\n\n\n\n

smiled to himself, \u201cthe dog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I will be very happy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

together\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because it\u2019s very sad to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopeful, the magician waved his magic stick, and CHACK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a cute little puppy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rested in his hands, exactly as he<\/p>\n\n\n\n

had pictured it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good magician was elated; he fed the dog,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cuddled and caressed its soft, curly fur. He took it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on walks and even gave it bubble baths. For sure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

this was the most spoiled pup ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after some time, the magician realized<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that a dog\u2019s love was not the kind of love he wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dog just wants to sit next to its owner and obey its owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The magician was very sad to see that even such<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a cute little pup that played so cheerfully and followed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

him wherever he went, still couldn\u2019t return all the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

goodheartedness that he wanted to give it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He realized that a dog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

just couldn\u2019t be the kind of friend<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that he was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It couldn\u2019t understand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the things he did for it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how he cared for his dog,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and how he troubled<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with the food and games<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he had made for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

could not appreciate all that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and this was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what the magician<\/p>\n\n\n\n

really needed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a friend who would<\/p>\n\n\n\n

appreciate his kindness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and good heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with the pebble and the flower,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician made many other kinds of animals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

beetles, fish, snakes, monkeys, birds, and bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, not a single animal could understand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

him and be the friend he was seeking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, the magician was sad,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and very much alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And once again, the magician turned to his thinking rock,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to determine what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought, and thought,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and thought really hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, he had a whole plan worked out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he realized that a true friend must be someone<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who would search for him as much as he was searching,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

someone who would want to find him as much as he<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wanted to find his friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, after some more thinking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he said to himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA friend must be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

someone like me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who does what I do, and loves the way I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the only way he could really understand me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, to be like me he would have to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

understand and appreciate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what I am giving him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This way, he could return my love<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and do for me what I will do for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, we would both be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For three days and three nights<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician sat on his magic rock<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and thought about his next creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he had a brilliant idea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t I make a man?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, what a great idea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He could be my true friend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He could be just like me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I make him just right,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he will love what I love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and appreciate what I will give him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019ll just need a little bit of help<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then we will be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

very happy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because we\u2019ll never be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to be happy, the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

magician knew,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his friend would first need<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to feel what it was like<\/p>\n\n\n\n

being alone and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, he would<\/p>\n\n\n\n

have to feel what it was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like being without the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

magician\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With new hope in his heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician waved his magic stick<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the fourth, and last time, and CHACK!\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time, two things<\/p>\n\n\n\n

happened: a man was made, but<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he was made in a very<\/p>\n\n\n\n

far away land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far away was that land,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the man didn\u2019t even know<\/p>\n\n\n\n

about the magician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He saw the mountains, the stars,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the trees, the flowers, the fish,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the animals, but he didn\u2019t<\/p>\n\n\n\n

know that it was the magician<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who made them. He didn\u2019t even know<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there was a magician!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the magician did not stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made a computer, football,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

basketball, and all kinds of games so the man,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his new friend, would enjoy himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But all the while, the magician was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

still alone and very sad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because his friend didn\u2019t know<\/p>\n\n\n\n

about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man didn\u2019t know that there was a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

magician who had made him, who loved him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and waited for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t know that the magician was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

whispering, \u201cCome, join me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we can be happy together,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because it\u2019s truly very sad to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But how can someone who<\/p>\n\n\n\n

doesn\u2019t know the magician, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

has a computer, football, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all kinds of fun things to do,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

suddenly want to find him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can someone like that even<\/p>\n\n\n\n

want to know and love him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can such a person be the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

magician\u2019s true friend,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and tell him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome, my good magician, let\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

be together and happy, because<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know how sad it is to be alone\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man knew only what<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he saw around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wanted to have what<\/p>\n\n\n\n

others had, do what others<\/p>\n\n\n\n

did, and talk about what<\/p>\n\n\n\n

others talked about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t know that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

somewhere out there was a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

good magician, who was sad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, our magician is a clever one;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he had a plan in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, he\u2019d had it all along and he<\/p>\n\n\n\n

was only waiting for the right moment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to carry it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one sunny day,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the right moment came:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician stood very far from<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his friend, and very softly whispered<\/p>\n\n\n\n

straight into his friend\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

heart: CHACK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He touched his heart with his magic<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stick, CHACK! And once again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A voice was calling in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

man\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when the magician \u201cChack\u2019d\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with his magic stick once more,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the man began to think,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHah, there is a magician!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hmmm\u2026 very interesting,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder what he\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of a sudden, the man began to think<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that perhaps it wasn\u2019t that much fun being<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without a magician in his life, that he would<\/p>\n\n\n\n

actually be much happier with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the magician \u201cChack\u2019d\u201d again<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the man suddenly felt that somewhere, very far away, there was a land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in that land was a tower filled with treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in that tower sat a wise and kind magician, just waiting for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the magician was whispering, \u201cHello, friend, I am waiting for you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

together, we will be happy, and alone we will be sad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the man didn\u2019t know where to find the land with the tower in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t even know which way to look for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man was sad and confused; he wondered,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do I find the magician?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And all the while that gentle tap was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

patting in his heart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHACK! CHACK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He couldn\u2019t sleep,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he couldn\u2019t eat, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he couldn\u2019t stop imagining<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that tall tower in his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s what happens when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you search for something<\/p>\n\n\n\n

really hard but can\u2019t find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can make you very sad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the man to be as wise as<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the magician, as powerful and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

goodhearted, the magician had<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to teach him how to do the same<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wonders he himself could do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help him, the magician gently<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and secretly led him to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

an ancient magical book,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

called The Book of Zohar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This book taught the man<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the way to the high tower in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

faraway land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the instructions in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

book, the man rushed to meet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his friend, the magician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wanted to tell him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve come to be with you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know we will be happy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when the man reached the tower, he<\/p>\n\n\n\n

discovered that all around it was a high wall,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

surrounded by scary guards. They pushed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

him away every time he tried to approach<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wouldn\u2019t let the man and the magician<\/p>\n\n\n\n

meet, much less be together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the more the man insisted, the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

tougher and more forceful the guards<\/p>\n\n\n\n

became. They had no mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man was in despair. His<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dear friend, the magician, was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hidden in the tower, the gates<\/p>\n\n\n\n

were locked, the wall was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

high, and the mean guards<\/p>\n\n\n\n

kept pushing him away. No<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one could enter and no one<\/p>\n\n\n\n

could leave the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man thought,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat am I going to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we cannot be together,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how will we ever be happy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every time he was about<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to give up, he felt a gentle Chack!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in his heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, he would again<\/p>\n\n\n\n

feel hopeful, searching for a way past the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

guards and the great wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if he weakened,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and there was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

no Chack! in his heart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he would cry out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to the magician,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you calling me in vain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can\u2019t you see<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that I\u2019m alone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, if a person is patient and endures the beating<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the guards, he becomes stronger, braver,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wiser. Instead of growing weaker, he learns to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

do his own magic, his own wonders,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like only a magician can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is what the man did, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, after all that<\/p>\n\n\n\n
