167) Jacob is the senior patriarch and contains all sides, right and left. This is why \u201cHe called his name Israel,\u201d as it is written, \u201cthy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name.\u201d It is also written, \u201cand He called his name Israel.\u201d Why did the Creator repeat Himself and called him \u201cJacob\u201d many times? And everyone calls him \u201cJacob,\u201d as before. And why it is written, \u201cYour name shall no longer be called Jacob\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
168) \u201cThe Lord shall go forth like a mighty man, like a man of war.\u201d Why it is written, \u201clike a mighty man,\u201d and it is written, \u201c like a man\u201d? It should have said \u201cmighty\u201d and \u201cman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
169) HaVaYaH [the Lord] is mercy [mercy] everywhere. HaVaYaH is the name of the Creator, as it is written, \u201cI am the Lord, that is My name.\u201d Sometimes His name is Elokim [God], which is judgment [judgment]. However, when righteous multiply in the world, His name is HaVaYaH, and He is called mercy. When the wicked multiply in the world, His name is Elokim. Thus, when Jacob was not among enemies, and not abroad, his name was \u201cIsrael.\u201d And when he was among enemies or abroad, his name was \u201cJacob.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
170) But it is written, \u201cNow Jacob lived in the land where his father had dwelled, in the land of Canaan,\u201d that is, he was not abroad. But still, the name \u201cJacob\u201d is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
171) Just as the Creator is sometimes called HaVaYaH and sometimes called Elokim, depending on the degree, He is sometimes called \u201cIsrael\u201d and sometimes called \u201cJacob.\u201d When he has a degree of GAR and Rosh [head], he is called \u201cIsrael,\u201d and when he is VAK, without a Rosh, he is called \u201cJacob.\u201d And the reason why it is written, \u201cYour name shall no longer be called Jacob,\u201d is so he will not remain with the name \u201cJacob\u201d but have two names, \u201cJacob\u201d and \u201cIsrael,\u201d depending on the degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
172) It is written, \u201cNeither shall your name be called Abram any more, but your name shall be Abraham.\u201d This is why he remained with that name. But with Jacob, it does not say \u201cwas\u201d [a word that appears only in the Hebrew Bible text], but \u201cIsrael shall be thy name\u201d; hence, at times he is called \u201cJacob,\u201d and at times, \u201cIsrael.\u201d And when his sons were crowned with priests and Levis and rose in the upper degrees, he was always crowned by the name, \u201cIsrael.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
