Seeing the Sounds

Based on a letter of Baal HaSulam from A Sage’s Fruit, Letters, (p 85)

Sound and tremor
Are one and the same,
But not all sounds

Can be pleasant.

The sound of thunder is frightening,
Unpleasant to the human ear,
Since the tremor takes up
Much of the power of its blow,
And also too much time.
Even if the blow were small,
It would still irritate the ear
For it would last too long.

But the sound of the violin
Is pleasant to the listener,
Since the force of the strike is measured
And its time is accurately measured, too.
One who extends the time
Ruins the pleasantness.
