190. The Place of Repentants

“Where repentants stand, complete righteous cannot stand” (Berachot 34b).

When a person learns, he is called “complete righteous.” When he cannot learn, he is called “wicked.” If he overcomes, he is called “repentant.” The rule is “According to the sorrow is the reward.” Hence, the complete righteous cannot stand where repentants stand.
