758. The Measure of Overcoming

“Man’s inclination overcomes him every day, and unless the Creator helps him, he cannot overcome it.” That is, the help that one demands is that only the Creator will help him, and not another force, meaning that he will truly have faith in the Creator. To the extent that he obtains faith, to that extent he overcomes his inclination.

This is the meaning of “He who comes to purify is aided.” The Zohar interprets, With what? With a holy soul, where through this force he defeats his inclination.
