175. Three Degrees of Man

“Rabbi said, ‘I have learned much Torah from my teachers, more from my friends, and most from my disciples’” (Makkot 10a). A teacher to a student is in a manner of bestowal. “More from my friends”: A friend asks his friend to learn with him, and by this do him a favor. “And most from my disciples”: Disciples are those who want to learn. They want to understand and say, “Teach us, our teacher, where this is from.” These are the three degrees in man.
