775. The Thoughts of a Gentile and Those of Israel

“Israel” is one who engages in Mitzvot [commandments]. A “gentile” means idol-worship, the bad in him.

Israel’s bad thought is that he engages in Torah and Mitzvot not for the sake of the Creator. Israel’s good thought is that his thought is to engage for the sake of the Creator.

A gentile’s bad thought means that he sees that he does not want to engage in Torah and Mitzvot because he has no faith. A thought that is Israel means that his thought is for the sake of the Creator. Yet, in fact, he does not have the aim for this, for the heart does not agree to this, and he thinks that the act of love is called “the feeling in the heart.”
