448. The Sensation of Wholeness

It is said about the verse, “‘The eyes of the Lord are always on her, from the beginning’ (Deuteronomy 11), sometimes favorably, sometimes unfavorably. Sometimes favorably, how so? Israel were complete wicked in the beginning of the year and were sentenced to few rains. In the end, they repented. It is impossible to add, since the sentence has already been given, but the Creator brings them down in their season on the land that needs them.” It is all according to the earth.

“Sometimes unfavorably, how so? In the beginning of the year, Israel were complete righteous. Therefore, they were sentenced to much rain. But in the end, they went astray. It is impossible to take away from them, since the sentences has been given, but the Creator brings them down not in their season and on a land that does not need them. At any rate, can the decree be rescinded and the rains increased? There it is different, for it is possible this way” (Rosh Hashanah 17b).

In other words, if a person is not rewarded, then during the eating he feels his wholeness, and during Torah and Mitzvot [commandments] he feels his faults and lowliness. But the truth is that it should be to the contrary: When he engages in corporeality, he should be lacking, and during Torah and Mitzvot, he should be in wholeness, and then he will be happy with his share.
