713. One Who Walks along the Way
“Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi said, ‘One who walks along the way without company should engage in Torah, as was said, ‘For they are a graceful accompaniment’’” (Iruvin 54). We should understand what it means that we need company when we set out on the road. To interpret this in ethics, “the road” means “the path of the Creator,” and “company” means Dvekut [adhesion], as it is written, “Now this time my husband will accompany.”
It tells us that one who walks on the path of the Creator and does not have Dvekut, the advice is that he should engage in Torah, since the reason he has no Dvekut is that he still has evil in his heart. When he engages in Torah, the light in it reforms him, and then he will be rewarded with Dvekut.
